On day one of my wash day, can I use Gel Oil mousse and Shea Butter?

Hello and welcome! Keep in mind, this challenge includes 2 days of scientific brushing - so your best bet is to pick a style and products that will accommodate the routine. Honestly, for your first time (and best results), I'd recommend keeping your style super simple -- only use a leave in conditioner and twist or braid your hair for easy take down/restyle. You can do so starting with blown out hair or by drying under a hooded dryer after installing your braids/twists. If you choose to heat style with a flat iron, be sure to include a heat protectant and use a serum on brushing days.

The point of this challenge is to learn your hair - what it does/doesn't need, and to let your natural sebum do its job. If you do the challenge once in its most basic form, you'll then be able to move forward with your fave styles (& will likely opt for using far less product). The more product you use, the more difficult it will be to see how your hair is responding. A gel, an oil, a mousse, and shea butter is a lot of product and using all will defeat the purpose of this challenge. Also, some (strong-hold?) gels may complicate brushing - an extremely crucial and beneficial element of the challenge. My first week was simple - added my leave in, blow dried, did 2 cornrows... that's it. I didn't add any other product besides a bit of oil on my brushing days for strand lubrication (none on my scalp)- turns out, my hair truly doesn't need any additional product... and it's been the same result for almost a of us. Good luck!
